Ben brought up a great recipe for Quince fruit, and since it is so rare for discussion I wanted to share my experience with my trees.  They are really quite beautiful in their color and blossoms but will tear you to shreds with their thorns.  Every branch end and side limb is a thorn that can be inches long and penetrate to the bone.  I've tasted one by taking it straight from the tree and cutting it because you can't bite them they're so hard, it about locked my jaw!  Check out Bens article for the particulars of the fruit here.

Double Red Quince Blossoms

You should be able to get a good idea of the size of the thorns on these trees

Taken back in the spring

Quince fruit

Full bloom...not a good photo but this is the color I see year round

Depilliated Woodpecker. I refused to chase him on Christmas day so this is the best I could do

Hi Hyde...I hope all is still going well for you and the Mrs. and you are busy back at work!

I didn't post alot of info on this fruit because the article from Ben covered most everything. I did leave a long comment on his article about them, you should check it out.

Wishing you all a wonderful and healthy new year!

Hi Hyde...I hope all is still going well for you and the Mrs. and you are busy back at work!

Yep, everything is going very well for us. I'm back to work full-time and off all meds. Only bad part is that I have to go in at midnight tonight so I'll be starting the New Year off at work. But it could be worse and I could be one of the people looking for a job, so I'm thankful that I have a job to go to!

I'm hoping for a wonderful year and good health for you too:)

Good shots DTH, colorful flowers. I've never seen Quince fruit before, and now I see why they have such long spikes thorns. Happy New Year!

You're right Dubbya....they are actually spikes. I look like the Goodyear Blimp when I go to cut them back...it takes 2 days and many holes in the arms, stomach, legs, hands....they penetrate anything you have on...including leather gloves. The birds love them to nest in.

Enjoyed the article and photos, Dare. I didn't think of Flowering Quince, when I read Ben's article, and have never seen ours produce fruit, though the bloom seems similar to yours. Here's a photo of our bush, which we've always called Flowering Quince or Japonica. Is it the same as yours?

Thanks etva...your blooms look a little more orangish then mine and I didn't see the thorns on it, are there spikes/thorns on yours? It's a beautiful color though. The limbs on the Quince are supposed to be the main attraction of the tree because they grow every which way and cross thru the trees. I tried to let one of them grow without cutting it back for a few years but some kind of hedge started coming up in the middle of it so I cut it back to get the hedge...you don't go into these trees unarmed, lol. If you need a yard barrier that NOTHING will come thru...these are what you want! I call them the maneaters, lol.

Our bush has thorns but not spikes, and is wider and not as tall as yours. The branches do grow every which way, and I'm not very good at remembering to trim them.

I'll have to do some research on it. It'll be interesting to see what we actually have - LOL:)

Thanks Mrs. D....I thought it may be my daughter and mom visiting me on Christmas since I haven't seen my woodpeckers in some time and they are my favorite birds.

I liked that photo too, and took some others that were pretty good, just never got around to doing anything with them. I was glad Ben posted his article...it snapped me out of some weird place my head has been :)

Very interesting fruit tree, looks very colorful and Thorny. The woodpecker in the first shot is hard to see but the 2nd one is very clear.

Thanks Fletch...thorny isn't even the word! The woodpecker in the first shot likes to make me chase him thru the woods and it just was not happening on Christmas, but he did at least come to see me. The second one is not a very good shot, but I was happy to see him too!

Dare - I also have a few quince bushes and they are beautiful in full bloom - the fruit not so much. I guess the birds must like it because it is usually gone pretty quick. Ben's a brave man to try the quinces fruit I think.

I'm actually looking forward to trying to do something with them next year if we don't have another drought. There was not much fruit this year and alot of it ruined on the bush due to lack of water I think. Depending on the history/myth of the fruit, yes, Ben was very brave to try it. I know people used to make preserves out of them but I've never seen any or tried it.

Do yours have the long spikes/thorns on them?

Maybe not so brave. I thought it was a normal fruit and that it could be eaten cut up like an apple when I picked it up. It was lucky that I looked it up first!

Now, the persimmon.... did not go over so well. It tasted fine but was like eating chalk.

Beautiful tree: taken last Spring! Those thorns are unbelievable! Youch!! Very interesting post. Love those woodpeckers the most though:) My Downy was here today but the pictures are not too good; too cloudy. But I do adore him and the Red Bellied too. Happy New Year Dare. Looking forward to all your pictures in 2012!

Hi Dare, In my old neighborhood in San Francisco there was a restaurant named Quince. Very pricey French food. I have a "different" type of fruit tree also. In my backyard,or should I say my land ladies back yard we have a persimmon tree. I was reading up on both and they are pretty fascinating. I like to call mine the Halloween tree because it looses all of it's leaves and is left with all of the bright orange fruit. The bear tree limbs and little pumpkin looking fruitis perfect for the holidays. In the winter, squirrels and opossum love the stuff as do a variety of birds, especially Ravens.

Thanks for getting me thinking. Both quince and persimmon are supposed to have medicinal uses as well.

Hi bobby, thanks for stopping by and sharing. The Halloween tree sounds like a perfect name for your tree, I would love to see it with it's little pumpkins hanging on it. I've never seen squirrels or anything but birds in the Quince trees, well there was a snake in one one year after a birds nest, but he didn't get far trying to get thru the thorns, lol. I used to have a dog that would walk around the bottom of one of them to scratch his back with the thorns, eek! If it wasn't for their beautiful flowers I wouldn't even have them, it takes 2 days to cut them back in the fall and by the time I get it loaded and unloaded I have about 100 holes stabbed in me.

Your mind is always working....you don't need help to get you to thinking, lol!

Hi Gray...I use a Kodak C875 w/5x Optical Zoom. Most of these photos were taken between noon and 3 pm. The first 3 were taken on Christmas day, the one with the fruit was taken back in the summer/fall and I couldn't tell you what time it was.

Thanks, and thanks for stopping by!

Happy New Year to you!

Was going to say, nice camera, great results, but no, its hardly the camera any more, its the person behind the camera. You took some great pictures. Happy New Year to you too. However, I wouldn't use a Kodak instamatic, or an old Brownie! :)

Thanks Grisham, I remember hearing Quince jams and jellies and stuff like that a long time ago but never saw any and the memory passed with time. I think whoever had this property before me must have had an orchard here because I have a pear tree in the back yard, an apple tree in the front yard, and now have 15 Quince bushes that I started from the original that came up. I think I just created alot of work for myself but they are truly beautiful in full bloom.
